"Seeing" the Future

First Day 2016
Welcoming a New Year
PATTI CONNER-GREENE

Mysterious. Slightly revealed but lacking definition.  Elegant.  Clouded in possibility.  Stark but gentle, waiting for more color to emerge.

All these thoughts came to mind when my colleague and friend Patti shared her photo of the morning which greeted her January 1, 2016.  I couldn't stop looking at it; I realized I vacillated between being mesmerized by the abstraction and wanting to wipe the glass clean for a clearer view.

Then it came to me that this feeling is exactly my reaction to starting a new year.  The future is looming, beckoning, but not divulging all it is or will be.  It is teasing me, hinting as to what may come but keeping all its options just slightly hidden.  And much like the photo, this is what captures me most about the wonderful clean slate we get every 365 days:  we have a vague idea about what may happen, but there are no sure bets....

I receive many blogs about goal setting, planning, scripting what needs to be done in the new year.  I'm not sure that's what I want to do right now.  But I found a question posed by Alyson Stanfield (www.artbiz.com) that resonates with me:

What creative project is scary enough that it will help you grow...?

That's a powerful question for each of us and one I am chewing on very seriously.  And going back to the photo...there is a touch of the scary in it perhaps, or no? Hmmm, what do you see?

Black and white thoughts for a color filled year,
Cindy

New Year - New Toy

Happy new year!  I adore "fresh starts." New year, new sketch books and new toys to play with.  The "art" above is a far cry from what I had imagined but I couldn't resist trying out my brand new Speedball, Elegant Writer pens a friend gave me.  When touched with water the ink bleeds....

Bleeding ink would be a huge liability if I had just spent hours doing a precise piece in calligraphy...and then sneezed.  But some smart cookie figured out how to use the bleed and market it for the art value of it.  (watch it here if you wish).

So I ventured in again:

The idea, obviously, is to plan ahead and then control the bleed....encouraging it to flow and change color.  When blotted almost dry it shows as magenta.  Which got me thinking: isn't the black ink on our printer made up of the blue, magenta and yellow ink?  at any rate, with a little (well, a lot) of practice, one could really have some fun with this.  The video, and my fellow artist friend, got to where they could control the bleed for shadows and then go back in with a color and complement the entire piece.  Once the ink is "activated" it will not run again.

Which just goes to show that one can make art out of almost anything...or find a new and wonderful use for the fault of some piece of equipment.  So intriguing.

I enjoyed my glass (or two) of bubbly last night.

May you, too, have a new year full of art ....more to come in 2016!

With best wishes
and much gratitude for your continued support,
Cindy

Bonus blog: a fresh canvas

I have two favorite holidays and the "new year" has always been número uno.  (Those who know me well can guess the other.) Ever since I could grasp the concept of a fresh start or a new page or a second ( third and forth) do-over, I have been making lists and performing rituals to say good bye to an old year and welcome a new one.  So if you are looking for art-related inspiration in today's blog, hit delete NOW.

I am not talking about big noisy parties where you yawn waiting for the ball to drop and then have to hug people you don't even know.  Nope, I much prefer those little home made ceremonies that you create with whatever inspires you at the time, that you perform only with like-minded individuals who fully respect what you are doing and engage with the reasonings.  Many of these transitions involve fire of some sort (as in burning past mistakes, snuffing out old flames, lighting a path in the dark.....); most involve some writing and all require the setting of one or more intentions.

When I was young and idealistic I would spend days working on a list of New Years resolutions.  I found one of those lists about 10 years ago stuck in an old book and funny, it looked like a list I should STILL be working on!  Some things don't change....

When we were young newly weds we would make out three lists: mine, his and ours.  And we would save them from one year to the next to discuss and laugh over.

Then we decided to eliminate lists but select an "adventure" for the year, something we very much wanted to do, out of the ordinary, that we resolved to put our energies, time and money toward making happen.

Sometimes we were successful, often times we learned to compromise with fate, other times we learned that disappointment is a fact of life.  Still, we made up ceremonies to jointly bury the past year and welcome a new one.

Silly?  Oh, I know folks who recoil from this sort of thing and are offended when I ask what they plan on doing with their brand new, fresh canvas of a year.  So passé, they give me a look.  But really, how to you get anywhere if you don't have an inkling of where you want to head?  How can you live higher up that mountain if you don't look back and evaluate the valleys?  I'm not one who waits patiently (sorry) for my ship or even my dinghy, to come in....nope, I'm swimming out to get it....or at least I'm clinging to a floater kicking hard and enjoying the attempt to get there.

Soooooooo, our ritual this year will involve some fabulous food paired with appropriate wine (chef selected) while we discuss 2014: the highlights, the lowlights, the successes, the little moments of pride we share with no one else, and of course the moments we wish we could do over.  Sigh.
Then we will come home to a bottle of bubbly and "make public" our new word of the year.  We are too old to make long lists, so we stole an idea from dear Cheri, the Patron Saint of Faeries.  When this little bundle of red headed energy flew into our lives several years back she loaned us the custom of choosing ONE WORD as an intention for the year.  Who can't remember ONE WORD? Which then informs everything we do.  So simple, yet so difficult.

Of course we will make new lists...but these are of adventures we are planning, experiences we shall try and books we shall read.

We will light candles, we will build a bonfire to dispose of old artwork, old grudges, unneeded records and whatever else should not be present in 2015.  We might wave around some white sage to clear the air of bad spirits and we may chant a few blessings into our hearts, say a prayer for loved ones.

When all is said and done and the coals are cold, we will embrace whatever 2015 brings with enthusiasm and energy.  More than any other holiday gift (and I really am not a fan of christmas giving) the unwrapping of a NEW year has always felt special and reverent to me.  Possibilities.  Opportunities.  Challenges.

So if you are still reading, you know it is with sincerity that I wish you a joy-filled RITUAL of leaving one year and mindfully walking, dancing or skipping into the next.  Do it with mac and cheese and a bottle of cranberry juice, do it with filet and Cabernet......just do it.

And I promise to blog about art here forth.  Happy 2015.

JoyFULLY yours,
Cindy

Burn, Baby, Burn & Day 3

Out with the old to make room for the new....
Canadian artist Robert Genn is also a great writer and inspiration.  When he recently discovered he had a terminal condition he began culling his work so that he could curate what was left behind.  While I am thankfully in good health, he nevertheless made me think about cluttered work spaces and cluttered minds. This prompted a clean out of closets, stacks, stashes and shelves.  His idea of a bonfire appealed to me so we planned one in conjunction with welcoming the new year.  My husband thinks I have hoarding tendencies so he was on board with set up and prep.
It was tricky slicing up canvas with my left hand but very cathartic as well.  Good riddance you nagging failures.
It was a very hot but beautiful fire.  We invited a couple over and as I fed the fire the other three played their musical instruments and we sang under a new moon as the new year rolled in.  I feel empowered and cleansed.  No regrets.

DAY THREE of 30 in 30 is "Rebellious Roses"
  7" x 5" watercolor on paper; limited left-handed edition!

Enjoy your weekend....and yes, for me the weekends do count in the one-a-day-challenge.

A Few of My Favorite Things...

In closing out 2013 and looking forward to 2014 I thought I'd share a few of my favorite things (art-related of course).  Please feel free to hum along...I hear Julie Andrews singing in the background! And boy was it hard to choose just a "few..."
Started the year with drawing classes from Jon Houghton
Collage paintings, this one inspired by Patti's chickens
Art for the Pieces of 8 show:
Black & White and Read All Over
Many afternoons learning mosaic with friend Cheri
Painting "Healing Ceilings" for the Raleigh, NC Cancer Center
A surprise sailing trip to celebrate 60 with my sis
All things related to my trip to Italy but especially the graceful Umbrella Pines and the awesome feeling of standing on the Appian Way... and any day Kelly took me out to paint!
The annual trip with the Pieces, this time to GA home of Phillis,
here is the barn at Washington Grass Inn
Painting some whimsy for my DiL Alex's laundry room
Camping with my husband in our new pop-up and capturing
the scenery in oil (St Augustine area)
More eye-candy: painting chairs just for fun
and knowing they have a new life!
".....when the bee stings, when the dog bites, when I'm feeling sad...I simply remember a few of these things and then I don't feel (crescendo....) so bad!"

With wishes for a  Colorful New Year for all of us.

Sun Rises on a New Year

Good Morning 2012!

I love new years, new notebooks, new canvas, new ideas, new plans and
no reasons that everything cannot be absolutely wonderful.
I did not paint the above sunrise but I've experienced it many times from my front
window in the mountains and it never ceases to feel like a NEW year, no matter when I gaze upon it.
Hope springs eternal, thank God!

The side of my brain that makes lists and charts projects has been busy with plans for
for 2012 but for now I will spare you the details.  Suffice it to say,
plenty of fun, lots of challenge, new places and new work.

After posting for a year (this is #99) I considered ending the blog and doing something
different with the time it takes.  Alas, I have found that explaining my work,
seeking an artful subject, sharing the projects of others, and spreading the
joy of owning art has been more beneficial to me and my growth than I ever could have imagined.
Besides I have met so many wonderful new artists in the process (on-line friends and mentors)
that quitting would deprive me of their valuable input.

I'm not kidding myself: the joy I had hoped to bring to you, dear reader, was a primary motivation for beginning...and your feedback warms the cockles of my heart more than you know.  But now I write because I must.  And I hope you will spread the word and share the ride....for one more year!

Best wishes for an ART filled 2012!

Two Medicine Creek

Remember to play this year.
I read a recent Richard McKinley article about starting a painting with a hard pastel sketch and then
covering it all with clear gesso which might cause it to smear a bit.
He then suggested going in with watercolors and splashing some color (and drips) around.

That was the play part!
Down to business was going back in with pastels and filling in some of the gaps.
This is Two Medicine Creek, a gorgeous little spot near Running Eagle Falls in Glacier
National Park.  It was nearing sunset and I remember
everything being pinky and orangish.

This is 16 x 20, mostly pastel on masonite....not framed (may never be)...this
one was for fun.
Have a wonderful, playful new year.

Artfully yours,
