Resting...

My tree series proceeds and sometimes I wonder if I see more into

these paintings than is possible?  No worries, I'm certain that

anyone who has ever hiked, or even taken a very long walk can relate to this one:

Honestly, this tree is for real!  We discovered it on a hike and I could not

resist.  Doesn't it look like it sat down and lost the energy

to get back up and move along?  I could feel the pain.

So I could not resist taking numerous photos and

filing them away to paint.

This was sketched out in graphite (a fancy way of saying pencil).  Then

I put watered-down acrylic washes on top, then back to graphite and then

more washes and back and forth until I got it where it is.

I've also spent plenty of time trying to image just how that tree got there

and grew (against all odds) so well in that spot...but mostly I just imagine pulling out

my water bottle and sharing a drink and a chat before I move on

along the trail.

Make Way for COLOR!

This is from a hike in the Grand Tetons National Park...and this shows a view

of the Grand Teton.  The piece is 11 x 14 done in pastel on top of a watercolor wash on clayboard.

But I am sharing it to make a color statement!  Out of the gate for the new year i

decided to let it rip and give "local color" (lingo for the real color match) the

boot and use a little "emotional color." Woo-hoo, I feel

like I am back on the trail hiking the scenic views.

Well, I'll admit the neon green is a bit harsh...I'll tone it down...maybe!

Here's a detail of the lower front where we stepped down on the trail to pass between the rocks.

One more detail of the star of the show...the grandest of all 5 Tetons and its

glaciers.

Alone but Happy

This proud mushroom stands solo but seems very happy in his forested retreat.

I have no problem giving personalities and even background stories to

plants and animals that I paint.  When I hike I

usually find clusters of mushrooms sprouting up after the rains.  This specimen

was different, no rain preceeded his discovery and no buddies were hanging

out nearby.  So I concluded he was either the Lone Ranger or the last survivor

of a mushroom clan.

The finished piece is 8" tall by 6" wide, done on a cradled (framed out) wooden board which is painted white along the edges.  It is rendered in acrylic washes and graphite (pencil), sealed and protected.

I enjoy painting on these boards as they are very flexible in the final stages: hung on a wall with the hanger on the back, propped up on an easel and thus able to be moved around, or even stood upright on a bookshelf.  They are very lightweight and there is no glass to break or smudge.

Any ideas as to whether this is a male or a female
