A Road Not Travelled

A road not travelled is always an

intrigue to me and this one in the snow carried an extra air of mystery because everything

was so, so quiet in the early morning as the sun came up.  I like paintings that take

you somewhere, even when I am not certain exactly where it is going...I like to imagine what might be around the curve, what might surprise me or comfort me.  Rounding the curve in this painting is like the sun coming up: it is a blank slate and a new beginning.  This is a 6 x 9 pastel on paper but it is matted in white to fit a standard  9 x 12 frame of your choice.  Yes, I'm still painting snow...more to come!

A Quiet Flow

In winter the Watauga River in NC slows down and ceases to offer the summer sounds of noisy birds and water tumbling over the rocks.  Under a fresh blanket of snow it all looks like a different world than the one to which I am accustomed.  Snow is fascinating to paint and I think I am ready to do several more.

Humble Glory

Carns are the workhorses of the flower world: they fill in the gaps, they provide background color so others can shine, they get little acclaim, and they are cheap.  Maybe for all those reasons and more (they last forever, take abuse, and are always available) I happen to favor this humble specimen.  This is one of several pieces I have done featuring carnations and as it is on a black surface it is hard to photograph without a glare.

Actually this painting starts as a drawing: colored pencil, some china marker and graphite.  Then I add a bit of white acrylic paint and, just for some glory, finish with a bit of gold here and there.  It is all sealed and finished with varnish and looks elegant in its wide antique gold frame. 

You can see it at our Dec 4 studio tour....until someone plucks it to shine in a place of honor in their home.  (7 x 5 w/o frame).
