Alone but Happy

This proud mushroom stands solo but seems very happy in his forested retreat.
I have no problem giving personalities and even background stories to
plants and animals that I paint.  When I hike I
usually find clusters of mushrooms sprouting up after the rains.  This specimen
was different, no rain preceeded his discovery and no buddies were hanging
out nearby.  So I concluded he was either the Lone Ranger or the last survivor
of a mushroom clan.
The finished piece is 8" tall by 6" wide, done on a cradled (framed out) wooden board which is painted white along the edges.  It is rendered in acrylic washes and graphite (pencil), sealed and protected.
I enjoy painting on these boards as they are very flexible in the final stages: hung on a wall with the hanger on the back, propped up on an easel and thus able to be moved around, or even stood upright on a bookshelf.  They are very lightweight and there is no glass to break or smudge.
Any ideas as to whether this is a male or a female
mushroom?

Surprise Gift!

One of the best phone calls ever came on Christmas morning from the person who received the painting(s) at the left as a gift.  He had actually contacted me about purchasing it but, unbeknownest to him, his wife had previously secured it and alerted me that he might call.  I had to kinda fib my way through his inquiry letting him know he was a tad late in making his intentions known. After promising him I would consider painting another one I packed this up and mailed it to the giver.  I think I was as thrilled as he was on Christmas morning when he called to share his surprise and excitment.  Knowing someone loves a painting is a very special feeling....makes me anxious to get back into the studio and paint again!

A Tip of the Cap

A Tip of the Cap! These mushrooms were happy to be noticed on an early morning walk and seemingly tipped their caps in greeting.

Rendered in graphite on cradled board the piece measures 12 x 12 x 3/4" and needs no additional framing.  Watercolor washes and acrylic complete the palate of this mixed media piece.
